2011 - The Facts are In
Sugary drinks are the No. 1 source of calories in teens' diets. Despite pledges by the beverage industry to market fewer unhealthy beverages to children, there is more—not less—advertising for sugary drinks overall.Those are the findings in Sugary Drink FACTS, a groundbreaking report released by the Yale Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity. Young people are exposed to a substantial amount of marketing for full-calorie sodas, sports drinks, energy drinks and fruit drinks, the study finds. T.V. ads for full-calorie sodas specifically doubled between 2008 and 2010.

The results are in, and they aren't what we'd hope for. The United States is still struggling to confront our nation's obesity epidemic.Twenty years ago, no state had an adult obesity rate above 15 percent. Today, only one state has a rate under 20 percent - and 38 states have obesity rates above 25 percent. Sixteen states have higher rates this year than they did last. It's jarring data found in F as in Fat: How Obesity Threatens America's Future 2011, released by the Trust for America's Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
